On Friday 7 March, proudly unveiled the Angus Mackay Pavilion – a 600-square-metre undercover learning and recreation space that is set to become a cherished landmark within the historic Junior School campus on MacKenzie Street.
Named in honour of Mr Angus Mackay, whose generosity has made its construction possible, the pavilion now allows students to enjoy lessons, breaks and assemblies outdoors – in all weather conditions.
Mr Mackay’s connection to Bendigo runs deep, with the Mackay family playing a significant role in the community since its early days as a goldmining settlement, and several of his relatives studying at Girton during its years as a girls’ college.
Although Mr Mackay himself was educated in Melbourne, his ties to the local community deepened further when he moved to Bendigo in the 1960s to run The Beehive, a well-known department store in Pall Mall.
Girton’s Principal, Dr Emma O’Rielly, said the pavilion has already established itself as an invaluable asset for daily learning and recreation, as well as for hosting major school events.
“After months of patiently watching the pavilion take shape, it was wonderful to see the joy and excitement on our students’ faces as they stepped inside it for the very first time,” Dr O’Rielly said.
“We are delighted to open a new facility that will directly benefit our students’ learning, wellbeing and pursuits of passion – all of which are essential elements of the holistic education we offer at Girton.”
In his own address at the ceremony, Mr Mackay reflected on his family’s special connection to Girton and shared his hopes for the pavilion’s future.
“I feel very lucky and pleased to have this facility named in my honour,” he said.
“It is nice to think that I have contributed in a small way and I have left a legacy in Bendigo. I hope the students enjoy the space and continue to enjoy exercise and sports, like I still do at 90 years of age.”
Dr O’Rielly said it was an honour to welcome Mr Mackay to Bendigo for the occasion, allowing him to see firsthand the transformation he has made possible and the school community’s appreciation.
“Beyond the many benefits this pavilion offers our students, it also stands as a lasting tribute to Mr Mackay’s connection to Girton and Bendigo – a legacy that will enrich many lives over the years to come,” she said.
“Our school community is deeply grateful for Mr Mackay’s generosity, as well as to the teams at e+ Architecture and Fairbrother Construction, who brought this magnificent structure to life.”
