The Girton Grammar Junior School today celebrated Book Week, with their annual dress-up parade. Teachers and students celebrated the joy of reading by dressing as their favourite character from a book.
Head of Girton Grammar Junior School, Mr Don Thompson, said that reading had the power to shape a young person鈥檚 life well into adulthood.
鈥淵oung people naturally possess wonderful imaginations and books are the fuel that keep the imagination burning bright.
鈥淲e encourage our students to read whatever they enjoy to nurture their love for literacy. Reading regularly begins as a good habit and can quickly become a passion for life for many people.
Mr Thompson said that students warm to the concept of reading espoused by Dr Seuss who said, 鈥淭he more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you鈥檒l go.鈥
Each year across Australia, the Children鈥檚 Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children’s literature and you will often see children’s book character parades and librarians creating amazing displays.听This year鈥檚 book week is 17-23 August.
鈥淲e know that reading for pleasure can promote better health and aids in building social connections and relationships, and about 85% of School curriculum is taught by reading.
鈥淭he reasons for making a love of reading a priority in schools and at home are compelling,鈥 Mr Thompson said.
