Girton students embrace colour and courage for World’s Greatest Shave

Tuesday 25 March 2025

On the morning of Friday 21 March, the gates of Girton鈥檚 Junior School opened to a vibrant spectacle of colourful and crazy hairstyles, as students and staff gathered to support the World鈥檚 Greatest Shave.

For nearly two decades, Girton students have embraced this annual tradition, rallying together to raise vital funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. In the lead-up to the big day, students embraced their entrepreneurial side by selling sold icy poles and handmade bracelets to boost fundraising efforts.

The highlight of the event was the shave itself, where 12 courageous Year 6 students volunteered to shave their heads in solidarity with those affected by blood cancer. Their selfless act was met with an outpouring of support from the school and the wider community, with generous donations helping Girton exceed its 2025 fundraising goal of $20,000.

Adding to the poignancy of the event, students also shared a heartfelt address about their own family鈥檚 experience with cancer, reinforcing the deep impact of the disease within the community.

Deputy Head of Junior School, Mrs Viv Bath, who has coordinated the event since its inception at Girton, highlighted both the excitement and significance of the day for students.

鈥淭he World鈥檚 Greatest Shave is always a special time at Girton. While it is a fun and colourful event, it is also deeply moving to witness our students come together to make a difference realise the impact they can have,鈥 she said.

鈥淲e are incredibly proud to have surpassed this year鈥檚 fundraising target, thanks to the outstanding efforts of our students and generosity of our community.鈥

Girton Grammar extends its gratitude to SM Hair Studio for donating their time and hairdressing expertise to support this event.
