Girton celebrates spirit of exploration at AI-themed Science Week

16 August 2023

This week, 黑料网 is immersing itself in all things science as it celebrates National Science Week, with the highlight being its buzzing Science Fair.

To be held on Thursday 17 August from 5pm, this year鈥檚 Science Fair promises to be bigger and better than ever, with the theme of 鈥楢rtificial Intelligence鈥 inviting students and visitors to tap into their curiosity and creativity, and embrace the spirit of exploration.

Work from the School鈥檚 youngest scientists right through to those studying science subjects for their VCE will be on display at Girton鈥檚 state-of-the-art Naunton Family Building in Vine Street, diving into the realms of biology, chemistry, physics and more.

The School鈥檚 new Lumination Learning Lab will be open, allowing all attendees to immerse themselves in virtual reality scientific fun 鈥 whether it鈥檚 completing a space walk on the international space station, dissecting a virtual frog or taking an adventure into the human body.

Attendees can also browse exhibits from a range of universities and local industry groups, and see a show performed by the Discovery Centre at 6pm.

Girton Grammar鈥檚 Head of Science, Ms Prue Beckwith, says the Science Fair isn鈥檛 just for the School鈥檚 students.

鈥淪cience Week gives our students an important opportunity to share their innovative projects and scientific findings with the entire School as well as the broader community,鈥 she says.

鈥淲e invite parents, families and the community to join us for an unforgettable event, where our budding scientists are sure to impress you with their creativity and ingenuity.鈥

In addition to the Science Fair, the School will mark Science Week by hosting real-world guest speakers from universities and local industry to inspire students to pursue their passions in the world of science, as well as holding English and art competitions and a philosophy debate centred on the AI theme.

With the use of AI being a much-debated topic in schools at the moment, Ms Beckwith says that it seemed fitting to embrace it as this year鈥檚 theme.

鈥淓merging technologies are at the cutting edge of science 鈥 it will be our students who shape the future of AI and what role it will play in our society, which is why we wanted to explore its current use and future possibilities as part of our Science Week activities,鈥 she says.

First held in 1997, National Science Week is Australia鈥檚 annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, and celebrate science鈥檚 cultural and economic impact on society.

黑料网 warmly invites parents, carers, families and members of the community to its Science Fair on Thursday 17 August from 5pm to 6:30pm in the Naunton Family Building on Vine Street (opposite school gymnasium)
