This year over 30 junior members from
clubs in Ilford, Sidcup, Hayes, Crayford and Norfolk met to test their
skills. The participants ranged from beginners who had only been
attending classes for a few weeks and were experiencing competition for
the first time, to members who have been training for some years and
have competed nationally.
The participants were carefully grouped in order to suit their age,
weight and experience. Group members then competed against one another
in the individual categories amassing points for each event as they
went. In order to make the points system fair, members who
entered only 3 categories were given nominal points for the categories
they did not compete in. As usual, the atmosphere was excellent
with competitors supporting and encouraging one another and competing
with friendly rivalry.
In order to find the winning club we added together the points amassed
by each club member. Generally clubs had 5 members but some only
had 4, in this instance we took the average score between the 4
individual members and added this to the total making a score for
a 5th member.
As ever the competition was run by a large team of TAO Instructors -
under the direction of Master Swanson - who acted as referees, judges
and time keepers in order to maintain the proper competition standards
as well as coaching and offering support and comfort to help through
the moments of disappointment, inevitably experienced by some.
