School Science Students Get University Gig

Year 11 黑料网 students, Maya Mann and Ruby Stone are two of 48 Science students selected to take part in a national residential 6 day Science conference to take place at Brisbane University in July.

Maya and Ruby were selected from applicants all over Australia, making them eligible to take part in the 2016 Youth ANZAAS (Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science) event.

Headmaster at 黑料网, Mr Matthew Maruff, said that there is a decline in the number of students taking up science and seeing it through as a profession in this country.

鈥淎ustralia needs to invest in scientific research and it should be a major exporter for this country so it is up to schools to nurture the next generation of technical experts.

鈥淥pportunities outside the classroom, like the Youth ANZAAS event, are really important in fuelling passion for Science,鈥 he said.

The 2016 Youth ANZAAS event will provide students with the opportunity to visit world-class research facilities, meet leading scientists, and undertake experiences usually unavailable to the general public. The conference also allows students to meet likeminded peers and other young adults who share their passion for science.

鈥淢aya and Ruby currently study Biology and Chemistry and both are likely to join the ranks of graduates from this School who go on to study Science at the Tertiary level.

鈥淎s Australia鈥檚 dependency on natural resources lessens, the need to embrace new technologies is increasing.

鈥淎t the core of the changes that must be made if we are to remain globally competitive is the need to focus on STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

鈥淲e are immensely proud of Maya and Ruby who follow in the footsteps of previous Girton students to be selected for ANZAAS and other national and international science forums, including Liam Murphy who last year won a Silver medal at the 2015 International Science Olympiads (Biology) in Denmark,鈥 Mr Maruff said.
